We are proud to announce the 3 winners of the Soul of Warrior Awards for their commitment to advocacy for improving the lives of women and children experiencing violence. The nominating committee had a very tough task to select the final winners. The decision was difficult as there were so many dedicated and deserving nominees. We want to take the time to thank all of the other nominees for their outstanding work and the positive impact they have in their community.
Our first winner is Michelle Fraser fromWomen's Habitat of Etobicoke who has been chosen to be the recipient for the Lifetime Achievementcategory award for her work with young women who have experienced or are vulnerable to experiencing gender-based violence. Michelle is celebrating 30 years of committed and exemplary service in the field where she has been at the forefront of developing the agency's Harm Reduction philosophy and policy.
Iliana Mena, Child and Youth worker at Ernestine's Women's Shelter is the finalist for the Children’s Advocate category for her engagement with young girls and women who recognized Iliana as a role model and mentor. Iliana is also seen as a resource among her colleagues in which she provides solutions to women and children that are experiencing both specific personal and systemic barriers. Iliana often goes above and beyond because she is able to recognize the barriers and the vulnerabilities experienced by clients.
Our last but not least winner is Chris Spiess for the Community Engagement award. Chris is being awarded for her commitment at the YWCA Women's shelter where she is described as an excellent advocate for her clients. She is extremely sensitive and non-judgmental in her interventions with the clientele and always encourages her colleagues to respect and support the choices women make. Chris is always very dedicated to her clients’ needs and often advocating for them based on their individual circumstances.
We want to also thank all the people who took the time to nominate the front line workers as a way to highlight their support for the community. We look forward to reviewing future nominations for the WomanACT Soul of a Warrior Award!
